July 27, 2020
Greetings, MSD Families,
We wanted to share with you that the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) released this new information regarding fall sports.
We know it’s hard for students to see some of their favorite activities delayed or cancelled; we are disappointed as well. In the Medford School District (MSD), we continue to hold the health, wellness and safety of our students, staff, and community at the center of everything we do, while working to provide a high quality and well-rounded education.
In accordance with the OSAA guidance, the following MSD sports will have their first contests delayed until September 23 (at this time practice is still scheduled to begin on August 17):
- Cross Country
In accordance with the OSAA guidance, the following MSD activities are considered “full contact” and are currently prohibited (practices allowed until Aug. 14, see below):
- Dance & Drill
The above sports and activities may continue to practice, train, and condition as long as all participants follow the health and safety guidance issued by OSAA and the Oregon Health Authority for hygiene and social distancing. Practices for prohibited sports would need to stop on August 14, prior to the official start of the fall season. Per the Governor’s Office announcement last week, masks are now required for all indoor activities, even while exercising, as well as outdoors when people cannot maintain 6 feet of physical distance
Should there be a change and OSAA determine that fall activities not take place, the OSAA executive board may consider shifting, condensing or stacking seasons. The OSAA is putting together a team to discuss Music and Speech & Debate, including how to safely hold competitions. More information on that topic is coming soon.
Families, please know that a high priority for our district, which is in alignment with that of the OSAA, is to provide participation opportunities for all students. We will receive further guidance from the OSAA most likely the week of August 3rd. We appreciate your patience as we work through these uncertain times together.
